Surprise inside Cake

I've been wanting to make a surprise inside cake ever since I signed up for the craftsy class by Amanda Rettke. I Love her blog (Iambaker) and of course follow it regularly.  I'm not sure how she can have so many creative ideas week after week. It is amazing...    I was excited when Sara asked me to make a cake for her sister's Sprinkle shower.   Since Sara is an amazing shower/party planner I knew I had to "step it up" for the cake...   Here is Baby Nora's Surprise inside Sprinkle cake...

I used the twice baked method for the letters- It was cake mixed with frosting to a playdough consistency.  I then cut 30 of each letter.

Here are the letters all lined us.  You place the cake batter all around to fill in so when it baked it envelopes the letters.

Since it was a sprinkle I had to have sprinkles inside and outside of the cake.  I also had sprinkles in every corner of my kitchen after it was all done... :)

The end result...   So exited that it worked!

Baby Whale Cake

This cake turned out to be a "whale" of a cake... It also unfortunetly didn't make it to its destination in one piece... The bottom layer split apart and the top layer came crashing down as I was driving up the turn pike.  It was very sad... but still edible.

The part that made it...

Baby Shower Cake

Baby shower cakes and first baby birthday cakes are amoung my favorite to make...  There are always lots of cute designs to shift through...  This cake was inspired by Corri Cakes.  I had hoped for an all pink cake but somehow I ended up with a peachish color...I'm still a work in progress but I was happy with the way this one turned out....

Baby Carriage Shower Cake

I broke my cake drought ( I haven't made a cake since May...) with a baby shower cake I made for my sister's co-worker.  It was sort of a cake wreck- I didn't support the bottom cake with straws, so the weight of the top cake pushed into the bottom cake.  By the time I got it to my sister's house it was looking a little rough...  I'll chalk this one up to another learning experience...

You can see the cake is starting to sink...

Polka dot baby cake

Getting ready to meet Juliet's little girl... Doesn't Jules looks great!  Love that the cake's polka dot's matched her dress...  Great minds think alike!
Here are some pictures of baby bradley's first cake...

The mostly completed cake... Just needs the flower on top.
Thanks to the tutorial at Corinna's Cake I learned how to make this super cute flower for the top of the cake.
Looking forward to meeting Baby Bradley in a few months...

Baby Morgan's Shower

Made this sophisticated baby shower cake design for a good friend's baby shower. I had this design in my "favorites" folder for a while and was hoping the right occasion would come along.  I used wilton's rose petal food coloring and it came out a little browner then I had hoped.  I also learned that even though I used the same food coloring the buttercream and the fondant are not the same color... I should have known that but another lesson learned...  Overall I was happy with the way the cake turned out.  I'm looking forward to meeting Baby Morgan!

A naked cake... waiting for icing...

Used imprint to trace the lettering.  Fondant flower is finished-made it using a heart cookie cutter.

 Lettering is finished...

Cake is assembled on site and finished...

Awaiting My New Nephew

Had a baby shower for my new nephew who will be arriving in about a month. We are all very excited to meet him.  I found the inspiration for the cake on cakecentral.com. I combined two cakes I liked and came up with the Onsie and clothes line combo.  Here are some pics of the assembly...

Cut the Onsie out of fondant with a steak knife...

What I used to make the snaps

Making the buttons...

Making the washline poles... Best thing I ever did was buy premixed black fondant. Black is the hardest color to mix.

The finished iced cake waiting for the pieces to go one... They are all waiting in the background.
The cake is finished for now.  I assembled it at the shower.  I didn't want to transport it on the cake stand and risk a cake wreck...

 The finished cake...

Can't resist sharing this picture of my super cute Niece. She was practicing her smiles today and got this one just right...
The rest of the girls... All looking fabulous!

Katie T's Baby

You know when you meet someone and after talking to them you feel like they have been your friend for a while... We'll that's Katie T for me... Although we don't see each other that often I feel like we have been friends forever because number one- she's super nice and number two- my friend Leigh gives me updates of what's going on in life.  Kate posted a picture of a cinnamon bun in a toaster oven as her profile picture to announce that she was pregnant.  Genius.   I used some inspiration from the invitation and recreated the baby bump. The cake was chocolate with buttercream icing with fondant accents. Here are some pics...

You may notice some alcohol behind the cake... Don't worry I didn't drink all of that while I was making the cake... I waited until after I was finished... :)
I used the image from the invitation to make cut outs in fondant.

Then I moved her to the cake...
Added some fun circles... and a brown boarder and she was good to go...

Here's the invite.  I loved the colors.
